Cardiac Surgery Specialty Center
The Stony Brook Heart Institute is Long Island's only university-based medical program dedicated to cardiovascular disease. We are committed to delivering the latest life-saving advances in heart and vascular care with effectiveness, compassion, and safety for our patients and their families.
The Heart Institute offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
The top-quality heart care provided here led to the Stony Brook Medicine’s recognition as “high-performing” in the 2011 U.S. News & World Report's “Best Hospitals” Metro Area ranking, in which Stony Brook was ranked 10th in the New York metropolitan area, out of 180 other hospitals.
Our multidisciplinary ventricular assist device (VAD) program is the first and only VAD program of its kind on Long Island.
Our surgeons are leading members of the Heart Institute, where all the cardiovascular specialists of Stony Brook Medicine work collaboratively to offer the care expected from doctors who are training the next generation of specialists across the country.
The Heart Institute provides Long Island’s only accredited ventricular assist device (artificial heart) program. In addition, our programs in robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery, for both aortic and valvular disease, add further distinction to our surgical care.
The Heart Institute staff includes 50 full-time and community-based, board-certified cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons, as well as 350 specially trained anesthesiologists, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, operating room technicians, perfusionists, and other support staff.
The expertise of the Heart Institute's team makes possible state-of-the-art interventional and surgical capabilities in 24-hour cardiac catheterization labs and surgical suites.
Visit the Heart Institute’s website to learn more about it and our multidisciplinary team of heart specialists. Be sure to visit our online heart-health library there, too.
