The Department of Surgery sponsors several programs that offer continuing medical education (CME) credits through the School of Medicine of Stony Brook University. In addition to our weekly grand rounds and clinical conference programs, special educational events that offer CME credits take place throughout year, as well.

Regular Events

Surgical Grand Rounds

Our Surgical Grand Rounds program is designated for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The weekly Surgical Grand Rounds lectures are generally held on Wednesday morning, from 7:00 to 8:00 am, in the Health Sciences Center (level 2, lecture hall 1).

Topics cover the full range of current surgical concerns, focusing on clinical issues of interest to practicing physicians and surgeons. Featured speakers include distinguished visiting professors from the nation’s top universities and medical centers.

Trauma Conference

The Trauma Conference of the Division of General Surgery is designated for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The weekly conferences are generally held on Friday morning, from 7:00 to 8:00 am, in the Health Sciences Center in the trauma conference room (level 18, room 040).

Topics cover the full range of concerns related to the trauma/critical care environment, including thoracic injuries, ICU administration/billing, and case histories. Presentations are made by attending physicians, as well as other medical professionals.

Vascular Surgery Conference

The Vascular Surgery Conference of the Division of Vascular Surgery is designated for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The weekly conferences are generally held on Wednesday morning, from 8:00 to 10:00 am, in the Health Sciences Center in the surgery department classroom (level 19, room 025).

Topics cover the full range of concerns related to the diagnosis and management of vascular disease, with case presentations. Presentations are made by attending physicians and surgical residents, as well as the director of the non-invasive vascular lab.

Special Events

Cleft-Palate Craniofacial Center Symposium

The annual Cleft Palate–Craniofacial Center Symposium, held in April, is designated for a maximum of 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The purpose of the symposium is to educate community physicians and dentists about the importance and different aspects of the multidisciplinary team approach to the care of patients with cleft palate–craniofacial disorders. It provides the information needed to facilitate the necessary coordination with each other to give their patients the best possible care.

Department of Surgery Research Day

The annual Department of Surgery Research Day, held in the spring, is designated for a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The morning forum showcases ongoing and completed research projects by way of poster competitions by our residents, medical students, and faculty.  The event is generally attended by over 200 faculty, residents, and students from across the university.

Surgical Seminars

Our Surgical Seminars program is designated for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The focus of each two-hour seminar is on what referring physicians need to know about the latest advances in surgery, in terms of the new options available for patients. Seminars are presented periodically throughout the year.

Venous Symposium

The annual Venous Symposium is designated for a maximum of approximately 18 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (from accredited agency, not School of Medicine at Stony Brook). The two-day symposium offers a comprehensive educational opportunity for those who treat or want to be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease. The 2011 symposium had more than 300 physicians and other healthcare professionals in attendance.

The symposium’s faculty comprises national and international experts in venous disease, together with the faculty of our Division of Vascular Surgery. Covering all aspects of venous pathology and presenting the latest in therapy, the program explores the intricacies of the evolving venous landscape to provide an ideal learning experience. Lectures and workshops with interactive discussion and models for hands-on experience are provided.
