The Division of Pediatric Surgery — founded in 1982 by Dr. Cedric J. Priebe Jr. — comprises our clinical faculty of board-certified pediatric surgeons and their support staff dedicated to our mission of excellence in the care of pediatric patients who require surgery; the education of medical students and surgical residents in the art of pediatric surgery; the performance of clinical research aimed at improving the evaluation and treatment of pediatric trauma; and community service, such as programs on pediatric trauma and injury prevention.

The Division’s faculty has been recognized for their clinical excellence by selection for inclusion in the present and past editions of the Castle Connolly Guide Top Doctors: New York Metro Area, representing the top 10% of physicians in the New York Metropolitan area, and also for inclusion in Guide to America's Top Surgeons (Consumers' Research Council of America).

The Division provides general and specialized pediatric surgical services to infants, children, and adolescents who have a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions. With more than 3,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 surgeries annually, we have the largest pediatric surgery program in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In addition, we also coordinate the Pediatric Trauma Service, which sees more than 300 admissions a year.

Our pediatric surgeons are part of the multidisciplinary team of Stony Brook Children’s, which provides the most advanced pediatric specialty care in the region. Our program in minimally invasive pediatric surgery offers many services that are unique on Long Island, and that offer considerable benefits to our patients and their families, such as generally shorter hospital stays, smaller scars, reduced pain, and earlier return to normal diet and activities.

The Division’s faculty plays an important role in the education of our medical students and general surgery residents, training tomorrow’s physicians and surgeons to provide the best care to children who require surgery. The faculty’s scholarly activity is demonstrated by their contributions to the medical literature, as well as by their participation in the nation’s professional organizations of pediatric surgery specialists.
