General Surgery Division Patient Care
Our general surgeons specialize in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a broad range of gastrointestinal diseases and hernias using both conventional and minimally invasive techniques. In addition, our surgeons also support and assume the primary clinical responsibility of University Hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Burn Center, and the hospital’s trauma service.
Our Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center is the only one of its kind in Suffolk County, offering a multidisciplinary evaluation and comprehensive treatment service to individuals seeking weight loss surgery. The center provides all of the weight loss procedure options for patients, and is directed by Aurora D. Pryor, MD, a nationally recognized leader in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery.
Our general surgery and trauma team is available 24/7 to handle acute issues that occur, and to provide consultation to the many other clinical services at Stony Brook.
As members of the only Level I trauma program serving the 1.5 million people in Suffolk County, our surgeons receive and treat over 6,000 trauma patients each year from all points of Suffolk County and from every community and Level 2 trauma hospital in our region. Our trauma program has also been recognized as being in the top 4% nationally and the top-ranked center in the care of pedestrian trauma.
According to the Department of Health for the State of New York, it is one of the top 3 trauma centers in the state, with the lowest mortality rate for victims of injury.
