General Surgery Division
Our general surgeons (left to right): Drs. Aurora D. Pryor, Steven Sandoval, Marc J. Shapiro, Jared M. Huston, James A. Vosswinkel, and Michael F. Paccione.
The Division of General Surgery comprises our clinical faculty of six board-certified general surgeons and their support staff dedicated to our mission of excellence in the patient care; the education of medical students and surgical residents in the art of general and laparoscopic surgery; the performance of basic and translational research aimed at advancing patient care; and community service, from giving free public lectures to partnering with the volunteer firefighters of Suffolk County.
Our general surgeons treat a broad spectrum of abdominal and gastrointestinal problems requiring surgical intervention. Not only do they perform conventional "open" operations, they have expertise in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of different forms gastrointestinal disease, including laparoscopic surgery to treat obesity.
The Division’s faculty has been recognized for their clinical excellence by selection for inclusion in the present and past editions of the Castle Connolly Guide, Top Doctors: New York Metro Area, representing the top 10% of physicians in the New York Metropolitan area. In addition, the faculty has been selected for inclusion in the Consumers' Research Council of America Guide to America's Top Surgeons.
Our Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center is the only one of its kind in Suffolk County, offering a multidisciplinary evaluation within the center and comprehensive treatment service to individuals seeking weight loss with or without surgery. The center provides an individualized approach to weight loss and the management of metabolic disease. We offer a full range of surgical options for patients, including minimally invasive surgery requiring only a single small incision and endoscopic treatment options.
The Division’s faculty also provides our trauma and surgical critical care service, including burn care within the section of traums/surgical critical care. Our surgeons are fellowship trained in all aspects of traumatology and critical care medicine, and they manage University Hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit, as well as the the Stony Brook Burn Center. Ours is the only burn center in Suffolk County, earning the support of the county’s volunteer firefighters.
Stony Brook is the only Regional (Level I) Trauma Center for Suffolk County. Our trauma specialists coordinate the initial evaluation and treatment of all injured patients transported by ambulance or helicopter to our Emergency Room. Our trauma program has been recognized as being in the top 4% nationally, and is the top-ranked center in the care of pedestrian trauma.
The Division’s faculty plays an important role in the education of our medical students and general surgery residents. They are given unique opportunities for exposure to leading-edge surgery, both conventional and laparoscopic, plus trauma and surgical critical care. In addition, the Division provides an accredited surgical critical care residency (fellowship), as well as a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.
With regard to research, the Division also provides patients with the opportunity to participate in clinical trials that offer them the only local access to newly developed treatment options. Basic science research is done, as well, in the fields of clinical outcome, new technology, injury, and metabolism, with the ultimate aim of improving patient care. The Division’s faculty directs our second research core laboratory, focusing on inflammatory processes.
Together, the clinical and academic strengths of the Division of General Surgery form the foundation for our continued excellence expected in patient care, education, research, and community service.
