The Department of Surgery provides a range of special clinical and educational services to the Long Island community to fulfill its mission of excellence in community service.

Screenings. We offer public health screenings on Long Island, NY, for a range of medical conditions at Stony Brook University Hospital, as well as at our satellite offices in East Setauket, Smithtown, and Hampton Bays — as well as at other locations throughout the Island.

Our screening programs provide not only free-of-charge or inexpensive clinical services to the community, but also give our physicians and clinical support staff the opportunity to provide health education in the community.

Education. Health education as a community service is also achieved by visiting speakers from the Department. Our Surgical Speakers Bureau offers opportunities for lectures on a broad range of topics, from updates on  the latest advances in minimally invasive surgery to what’s new in surgical research.

Surgeons. Another important aspect of our community service mission is our training of surgeons for Long Island. Nearly a third of all graduates since our first graduating class in 1975 are now in practice throughout the Island, serving the community with a range of surgical specialties.

All told, our diverse community service programs reflect our commitment to serving the Long Island community as both healthcare providers and educators — here at Stony Brook Medicine and out in the community.
